Running Dog

There can be little doubt that as early man reached the more temperate climes of Europe and Asia, of Europe deer were his primary source of protein. Rabbits were to fast, birds were too quick on the wing cattle were not yet domesticated, wild boar was too dangerous so his most frequently encountered other source were members of the deer family. These could be speared or hunted with bows and arrows. The meat could be eaten fresh, smoked or dried in the sun.

Finally, some species of deer, such as reindeer were tame enough to be semi-domesticated and led in herds for food.

Thus began the long love-fear relationship between man and deer that lasts to this day.
