Running Dog

The turkey was originally domesticated by the Aztecs, the common turkey, or the Rio Grande gobbler, ranges from Mexico to the northern forests of North America. At one time almost extinct, it has made an impressive comeback and is now found in wooded areas of most of the contintinental states. Although considered strong fliers, the wild turkey can also run at speeds of up to 15 mph. In the wild, the common turkey may enjoy a life span of up to 12 years. They are usually hunted from camouflaged blinds using hand and mouth turkey calls to attract the birds within shooting range. Some guides and outfitters will also put out feed to attract the birds so they can be easily taken.
